Weak trading figures add to high street gloom

Some of Britain’s biggest retailers delivered weak trading figures and warned that the outlook was darkening going into Christmas as consumers continue to cut back.

John Lewis , Argos and Homebase all said they were feeling the effects of a downturn as they disappointed with weak sales and falling profits. The news sent the general retail index down 3.4 per cent in the UK.
