Latin America should remain Telefónica’s growth engine in 2009, in spite of increasing signs of a deep economic slowdown on the continent, said Julio Linares, the Spanish telecoms company’s chief operating officer.

In a bid to reassure investors, Mr Linares told the Financial Times that Telefónica is expecting its extensive Latin American operations to generate double-digit revenue growth this year.
