Tesco’s chief executive has told suppliers that they will have to bring down prices to help cash-strapped consumers in the latest salvo of what is shaping up to be a combative year for retailers and consumer goods makers.

Sir Terry Leahy told the food industry this week that prices would have to come down on the back of falling commodity prices.
