Presidential poll in Croatia goes to second round

Stipe Mesic, the Croatian president, yesterday easily won the country's first round of presidential elections but narrowly fell short of the 50 per cent he needed to win automatic re-election.

Mr Mesic, the popular incumbent who has overseen the former Yugoslav republic's transition from quasi-dictatorship, won 49 per cent of the overall vote with 99 per cent of ballots counted, election officials said.
