Underfunded education system undermines India

India’s attempts to join the world’s most technically advanced nations are being undermined by under-investment in education and low university enrolment, prime minister Manmohan Singh warned on Tuesday.

Mr Singh’s remarks follow a disastrous 48 hours for India’s flagship science programmes, which saw the first flight of the country’s next generation long distance missile, the Agni III, end with an ignominious splash in the Bay of Bengal.
