A&L and B&B not easy targets

For years, there has been recurrent speculation about further merger and acquisition activity among the smaller UK banks - but so far little has happened.

Last week, Eric Daniels, chief executive of Lloyds TSB, noted that UK bank valuations had fallen sharply, sparking speculation that Lloyds might decide to look at buying the likes of Alliance & Leicester or Bradford & Bingley.
