Samsung Electronics profits disappoint

Samsung Electronics on Friday reported a 51 per cent rise in quarterly net profit as brisk sales of the South Korean group’s flat panel displays and mobile phone handsets offset the weak performance of its chip business.

But the results were lower than analysts’ expectations and the shares fell after Samsung warned that a slowdown in the global economy would hit demand for its technology products. The shares closed down 6.2 per cent to Won576,000.
