IFIs: A crisis institution that is watching from the sidelines

For several years, the International Monetary Fund was frequently compared to a fire brigade with no fires to fight. For most of the current decade, financial crises were conspicuous by their absence.

The IMF’s last big rescue lending operation started in 2002, when it made the biggest crisis loan in its history, announcing a total loan of $30bn to Brazil.
