Austria may face one of its most challenging years in 2006 but it is a relaxed Wolfgang Schüssel who answers questions in his commodious office in the historic federal chancellery in Vienna.

First, European and then domestic politics will test one of Europe’s longest serving leaders. For all his reputation as a wily negotiator, Mr Schüssel will find himself stretched on both fronts.
