Mining: Gold pieces of a geological puzzle

In the poker game that is modern mining, Uruguay Mineral Exploration (UME) holds some strong cards – and plays them close to its chest.

After years compiling information on metal and mineral deposits, UME’s two Australian founders entered the Uruguayan market in 2003, snapping up an existing gold mine at San Cristobal, near Rivera on the northern border with Brazil, for $2m.
