Sarkozy says he will fight Chirac for presidency

Nicolas Sarkozy, France's most popular rightwing politician, has indicated that he will fight for the presidency in 2007 even if it means running against Jacques Chirac, the incumbent who belongs to the same party.

Mr Sarkozy's assertion of his political ambition threatens to unleash a destabilising power struggle on the French right two months ahead of a critical referendum on Europe's constitutional treaty.
