Central banks act to calm financial markets

Central banks in Europe and the US were active on Thursday in further efforts to curb rising funding rates for banks.

In the UK and Switzerland, central banks added extra funds to the banking system. The European Central Bank said it was prepared to inject additional liquidity into the financial system.
