Germany and China tilt the scales of world trade

Back in the 1990s, the US dominated global trade thanks largely to its vibrant performance in the new economy. Since 2000, the old economy has made a spirited comeback with America's export leadership increasingly challenged by an odd couple: Germany and China.

By 2003, Germany had already pulled ahead of the US to become the world's number one exporter. The following year, China captured third place from Japan and is now breathing down America's neck.
