Senate breaks deadlock over housing bill

US senators broke a month-long deadlock over new housing legislation on Tuesday after agreeing rapidly to draft a bipartisan bill that would deliver a significant dose of government aid to struggling mortgage borrowers.

The decision to move forward with legislation to tackle the mortgage crisis reflects heightened pressure on Capitol Hill for action to address the root of the US economic slowdown.
