Barack Obama continued his steady march towards the political centre by announcing on Tuesday that he would expand George W. Bush’s controversial programme to contract out welfare assistance to religious charities and treat it as the “moral centre” of an Obama administration.
Mr Obama’s latest move, which he unveiled at a community ministry in Ohio, one of the largest general election swing states, followed a speech in Missouri on Monday in which the Democratic candidate sought to shore up his patriotic credentials.
