Oil well in the South Downs gets green light

An oil well is set to be drilled in an area of outstanding natural beauty in the South Downs after West Sussex County Council gave permission for exploration by Northern Petroleum, an Aim-listed oil and gas company.

Soaring oil prices have stoked interest in looking for oil in previously neglected areas. But Northern’s hopes of drilling in Markwells Wood, near Chichester, have roused a storm of protest.
