Asian exporters cut crops to aid farmers

A steep fall-off in the prices of agricultural commodities is setting Asian exporters on a scramble for measures to protect farmers anxious about plummeting incomes.

Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia, which between them produce about 80 per cent of the world’s natural rubber, this week agreed to reduce production by about 210,000 tonnes next year by cutting down trees as part of an accelerated plan for replanting.
