Cash-poor states sell operations

The operation of many areas of US transport infrastructure looks set to be transformed as cash-strapped state governments offload roads, ports and airports to private sector operators.

The moves come in response to the drying-up of revenue from fuel taxes – the main source of road-funding for most states – and the growing share of state budgets consumed by health and education. There is also hope they may increase the efficiency of operations.
