At West’s Pork and Bacon butcher’s shop in Tralee, the assistant, like many in the County Kerry provincial capital, seems blissfully ignorant of the issues in the Irish referendum campaign on the European Union’s Lisbon reform treaty.

“It came in sometime last week,” she says, stretching beneath the counter and pulling out a leaflet. “I haven’t read it.”
