Ethiopia promises troops for Darfur

Ethiopia pledged 5,000 troops to the new international peacekeeping force in Darfur yesterday as negotiations over its composition continue at the United Nations and the African Union.

Meles Zenawi, Ethiopia's prime minister, used a meeting with Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, in Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital, to propose sending the "fully equipped troops" to join the force "as soon as it is deployed".
