Knowledge economy: Clusters provide added lustre

Over the past 30 years, the city of Cambridge has become a powerhouse of enterprise and innovation, and hub of the UK’s leading high-technology business cluster.

According to a report published by the Cambridge Technopole Group – an informal network of business support organisations operating in the Greater Cambridge sub-region – there are some 1,400 high-technology companies employing 43,000 people in a 25-mile radius around Cambridge. Little wonder that some have dubbed this region “Silicon Fen”, a play on the Silicon Valley high-technology cluster in California.
