Clarke puts his status at heart of leadership challenge

Kenneth Clarke’s bid for the leadership of the Conservative party gathered momentum on Sunday as the former chancellor played up his heavyweight status and two senior Tories backed his campaign.

Mr Clarke is formally expected to declare his candidacy in the next fortnight rather than waiting until the party adopts new leadership election rules giving the final say to MPs.
