S&P 500 back above 750 level

US stocks surged on Thursday as a steady stream of positive messages helped financials drag the benchmark S&P 500 index above the psychologically important 750 level.

Ken Lewis, the chief executive of Bank of America, became the third head of a leading bank to say it had been profitable in 2009. This followed a leaked memo from Citigroup’s Vikram Pandit on Monday and a speech by Jamie Dimon of JPMorgan on Wednesday saying similar things.
