EU finance ministers promise crackdown on waste and fraud

European Union finance ministers yesterday promised a clampdown on waste and fraud in the EU's €100bn ($118bn, £68bn) budget, but rejected demands that they should take personal responsibility for the problem.

The European Commission wanted finance ministers to sign a declaration that EU money in areas such as farm subsidies and regional programmes was being correctly spent.
