If the opinions of US newspaper publishers and editors were to determine the presidential election Senator John Kerry, the Democratic candidate, would win by a hefty margin.
Over the weekend, Mr Kerry picked up 17 endorsements from newspapers that chose President George W. Bush in 2000, and surged ahead in the overall count, according to Editor and Publisher. With endorsements of at least 28 newspapers that picked Mr Bush four years ago, Mr Kerry has a total of 113 endorsements to Mr Bush's 71 or about 14.4m to 8.6m in circulation.
