Business groups voiced concerns about the practicality of David Cameron’s plan to seek an opt-out from some European employment laws, while giving cautious backing to the principle.

The Tory leader proposed to negotiate the return of Britain’s opt-out from social and employment legislation in areas “most damaging to our economy and public services”, such as aspects of the working time directive that caused problems for health and fire services.
