Travel industry lifted by ‘staycation’ trend

The “staycation” effect and sterling’s weakness against the euro offered some respite for the struggling travel industry during the summer, partly offsetting steep falls in business travel, according to official data.

Overseas trips by Britons fell by 12 per cent to 63m in the year to July, the Office for National Statistics said, underlining the impact of the recession and the weak pound on the traditional summer vacation abroad.
