OFT chief calls for ministers to 'free markets'

Hopes that government procurement contracts might be opened up to a wider range of bidders were boosted yesterday when the head of the Office of Fair Trading warned that government bodies must be subject to the same competition rules as private companies.

John Vickers, OFT chairman, used a speech at a competition policy conference at Merton College, Oxford, to insist that ministers should free markets, even where public bodies were economically involved.
