When there’s nowhere to go but each other’s arms

As I have remarked before in this column, the mergers and acquisitions game looks pretty healthy these days. Corporations that have strong balance sheets can press on with strategic purchases without private equity putting prices out of reach.

On closer inspection, though, M&A can still be a troubling phenomenon. Leave aside its tendency to destroy value. What does the prevalence of this activity tell us about the health of the industry in question?
