New hotspots emerge as luxury goes local

There are few places in the US that appear further removed from European haute couture than North Carolina. In America’s popular imagination, the state is a stronghold of “redneck” southern culture, involving the worship of pickup trucks, country music and stock car racing.

It will come as a surprise to many, therefore, that Hermes, the French luxury goods brand, plans to open a store in Charlotte, North Carolina, later this year.
