Royal Bank of Scotland signalled the beginning of the end of its long association with sport when it announced the demise of its flagship sponsorship of the Williams Formula One racing team, and said it plans to halve sponsorship budgets by the end of next year.

RBS will end its relationship with Williams when its current contract, thought to be worth £12m a year to the F1 team, expires at the end of the 2010 season.
