Ministers were accused on Thursday of allowing the tourism industry to suffer for the sake of a few million pounds while they spent billions bailing out other blighted sectors. Tourism leaders levelled the accusation at the government as new figures showed the fall in visitor numbers was accelerating.
US visitors for the last three months of 2008 were down 27 per cent on the same period the year before, the Office for National Statistics said. This was by far the biggest fall.
