Silicon Valley, birthplace of the semiconductor industry and then of Google, Yahoo and eBay, is experiencing a fresh wave of growth as a telecommunications innovator.

“Smartphone Valley” companies are tapping computing and internet networking expertise here as handsets become more like computers and telephony shifts to internet protocol (IP) communications.
