Medical specialists have urged European governments to do to more to stimulate research into new antibiotics in the face of the fast-growing threat of infections that resist drug treatment.

The calls came during a two-day inter-governmental EU conference that opened yesterday in Birmingham, hosted by the Department of Health, to study new ways to promote anti-infective drugs, vaccines and diagnostics.
