Under threat from unregulated development

As one of Europe’s richest areas for wildlife, Bulgaria has included more than one-third of its territory in the European Union’s Natura 2000 system for protecting the environment.

But the country’s rush to develop a mass tourism market, based on sun-and-sand holidays on the Black Sea in summer, and ski-ing trips in winter, poses a threat to several protected areas.
