EU urged to show it still has muscle

France will call on the European Union on Thursday to support measures against rising fuel and food prices, and show citizens that Ireland’s rejection of the Lisbon treaty has not stripped the bloc of its capacity for action.

At a two-day summit overshadowed by the treaty crisis, President Nicolas Sarkozy is expected to argue for swift action to help vulnerable workers.
