Wall Street shrugs off weak economic data

A rally in commodity-related stocks helped Wall Street to its third session of gains despite new data showing plummeting consumer confidence and further weakness in the housing sector in mid-afternoon trading on Tuesday.

Statistics from the Conference Board suggested that consumer confidence in the US fell to its lowest since March 2003, when the Iraq invasion was under way.
