Sheikh Mohammed, Dubai’s ruler, earlier this month travelled to the neighbouring emirate of Fujairah, where he and several ministers visited a local man who lived in the same house as his three married children. Shocked at the cramped conditions, Sheikh Mohammed promised to build new homes for the father’s children.
The meeting, broadcast on state TV, underlines the attention that the growing inequality gap among locals is receiving from the government. The poorer northern emirates are a far cry from the affluence of Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
