French premier warns on deficit

François Fillon, the French prime minister, has warned that France’s structural deficit could threaten the survival of its economic system, unless the government takes control over the country’s ballooning debt levels.

His stark warning contrasted with the more confident tone expressed by President Nicolas Sarkozy on Monday, in which the President dismissed a policy of “austerity” and announced a new public loan.
