Transatlantic trends: Where work is no holiday

“Vacation,” wrote Earl Wilson, an American newspaper columnist, “is time off to remind employees that the business can get along without them.”

This statement, it seems, could be interpreted as positive or negative depending on which side of the Atlantic you live, for the approach to holiday time is one of the aspects of working life that most clearly divides European and American employees.
