Universities face overhaul of funding

Universities will be allocated more than £1bn of government funding based on how much they receive in grants from other sources under revolutionary proposals announced yesterday.

The current Research Assessment Exercise, where the work of every researcher is scrutinised by 67 different subjects panels, will be replaced after 2008 with a less bureaucratic system.
