McCain faces dilemma on campaign attacks

John McCain was weighing conflicting advice on how to salvage his fading presidential ambitions yesterday, amid mounting criticism of the racially charged atmosphere at Republican campaign rallies in recent days.

Many grassroots Republicans and some party leaders want their candidate to step up attacks against Barack Obama as opinion polls show the Democrat consolidating his lead with a little more than three weeks until the election.
