The ban on short-selling financial stocks in the UK puts a brake on punters keen to bet that shares in Royal Bank of Scotland, Barclays and other banks will fall further.

Spread betters who still want to profit from falling bank shares are having to seek out alternatives. One way to avoid the ban is to place fixed-odds bets on financial stocks.
