Manila calm after coup attempt

Manila was back to normal yesterday, a day after security forces crushed an attempted uprising by rebellious military officers facing trial for a previous aborted coup.

The police lifted a midnight-to-dawn curfew and allowed thousands of anti-government protesters calling for the resignation of Philippines President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo to demonstrate less than kilometre away from the presidential palace.
