Wal-Mart provided some rare good news from the US consumer on Thursday, delivering surprisingly strong sales for June as retail spending was boosted by federal tax rebates.
In a sign that consumers were trading down to cheaper stores amid soaring oil and food prices, same-store sales at Wal-Mart’s US stores rose 5.8 per cent, excluding fuel, above its own expectations of a 2-4 per cent rise.
