John McCain was poised to unveil his Republican running mate on Friday as an opinion poll suggested Barack Obama had widened his lead in the US presidential race during this week’s Democratic convention.

Mr McCain planned to introduce his vice-presidential pick at a noon rally in Ohio in a bid to seize attention from Mr Obama’s convention speech on Thursday.
