The Democratic party must be feeling a lot like a Louisiana ditch digger right now, wondering when this awful summer is going to end.
By most measurements, the summer of 2009 has been blistering for President Barack Obama, with congressional Democrats suffering particularly badly. A presidential job approval number hovering around 50 per cent, an energised Republican base, 9.7 per cent unemployment, a domestic policy agenda on the ropes, and a downward-spiralling situation in Afghanistan all seem to be pointing to a doomsday scenario in next year’s midterm elections.
