Tropical storm swings towards Florida

A state of emergency was declared in Florida on Sunday as Tropical Storm Ernesto churned through the Caribbean, with forecasters warning that it could become a hurricane before making landfall in the Sunshine State later this week.

Ernesto briefly became the first hurricane of the year on Sunday before weakening as it passed over Haiti. But the storm was expected to regain strength as it neared the US, fuelled by warm water in the Gulf of Mexico.
