The standby lights of home appliances have come to symbolise the wastefulness of modern consumer culture. CamSemi aims to make them burn less damagingly using silicon chips that manage power more efficiently.

Its semiconductor designs secured it £13m ($25m) in new funding in October, reflecting the growing interest of venture capitalists in clean technology. The business hopes to float in about two years.
