The financial sector bore the brunt of heavy losses suffered by European equity markets this week.

The FTSE Eurofirst 300 ended at 1,463.3 on Friday, down 5.1 per cent over the week, its biggest weekly fall since March 2003. The close left the index down 1.4 per cent this year.
